January OMG Finale

My goal this month was to create all the units necessary to make the 50 blocks of Bonnie Hunters 2018 Mystery Quilt On Ringo Lake.  Mid way through the month as I started to work on the corner units, I decided to begin assembling the blocks.  Luckily I went back to making all those units to make the blocks because I noticed that I had assembled the blocks incorrectly. I deconstructed and reconstructed them correctly.
.
I also finished the last of my Kathy Schmitz calendar blocks.  This year I will be able to display all twelve months.  Additionally, I caught up on Gina Perkes Mastery Ruler  Class.  I am looking forward to February's post for the next part.  Now I have to contemplate what I can reasonably finish next month.

Thanks as always to Elm Street Quilts for  hosting OMG and to her sponsors.

Before and After: On Ringo Lake Redo

My sister had posted that she had 12 blocks completed.  I was bemoaning that I had about half as many as she when I realized that I had assembled my six blocks incorrectly   Then I was celebrating.  I only had six to redo

I set about deconstructing the corners of my blocks and reconstructed them according to the mystery quilt directions.
I quite like both renditions.  I suppose I could have done my own but this time I wanted to make a quilt that anyone would recognize as Bonnie Hunter 2018.  Mystery quilts are so much fun.

January OMG Finishes

I have finished my units and have begun assembling the blocks.  Next I will finish assembling the blocks with the sashing and border.
I also finished my last two Kathy Schmitz BOM blocks.
These mini quilts were great to have around.  The stitchery was always something I had on hand as a grab and go project.  One always wants these to have handy for waiting for appointments or short trips to have for some fun.  I needed to do these because I started two mystery quilts.  I love them but it pulls me away from my UFO's.  I was feeling guilty for abandoning my UFO queue so I needed to a couple of quick finishes.  To be continued......

On Ringo Lake Mixing the Clues Creation with Block Construction

I have not finished clues 4 and 6 but once I saw the reveal I was anxious to move on to block construction.  I have made which is 10% and sounds like I am making progress.  Meanwhile I am amazed at the number of quilt tops I see posted.  Great job everyone.  I think I will bounce back and forth between making patches and making blocks.  There is still a long way to go.  But as Bonnie says it is not a race.  I am enjoying the process.

Flying Geese Next because Clue 3 On Ringo Lake FINALLY DONE!!

Finally, clue #3 is done.  This was challenging for me.  As I sewed the patches would jam in the plate.  I tried leaders an enders but it still happened even when chain piecing.  Urghh!!!  Then when I tried to separate the patches the thread would come loose and I would have to restitch.  I changed the tension but then whenever I turned the sewing machine off I forgot to set the tension again until the problem happened again.  When I tried to press the patches the fabric seemed to stretch and the end of the patch seemed to no longer be a square corner.  While I was struggling with this I decided to change up my method for the brown flying geese.  I am making 4 at a time.  I am cutting one square that is 1.25 inches larger the finish width (in this case 3 + 1.25 = 4.25) and 4 squares that are 7/8 inch larger than the height of the goose(in this case 1.5 + .875 = 2.375).  I made a set of brown geese for one block to give myself a break from clue 3.  I figured out the square inches needed for the geese and I picked a fabric that I had enough of to make them all.  I made some Brave New World blocks so I could layout a sample block.  When I got done, I realized that I think I would rather have scrappy than uniform.  I have now pulled out my brown fabrics and now I need to find some more lights and I will start on the geese.  When I made my first set I cut my 4 squares 2.5 inches and it worked just fine.  I think I am going to cut my larger squares a generous 4.25 inches because my sample set was cutting it a bit too close.  I want a little extra.

January OMG

I have laid out one block of Bonnie Hunter's On Ringo Lake Mystery.  My goal for this month is to make all the patches for the 50 blocks of this quilt.  The block is laying on top of my sister's UFO that I am in the process of quilting.  Gina Perkes Mastery Ruler Series should be posting a new lesson in January so I also want to keep up with that project as well.  I also want to finish a Kathy Schmitz Calendar Block which reminds me...My December block is still on display....
and it is January....the snow banner so appropriate as we are in the midst of a blizzard.  I surely hope we do not lose power.  It gets so cold in the house when we lose power.
A shout out to Patty at Elm Street Quilts for hosting OMG,  Come join in and work on your UFO's with us.  I enjoy seeing what others are doing.

On Ringo Lake

I am working diligently on clue 3.  I am making progress.  I need about 50 more patches.  This patch I am finding arduous so I decided to make some other patches.  I decided that I am making my brown geese 4 at a time.  I am cutting a 4.25 inch brown square and four 2.5 inch lights.  I tried it using my Clearly Perfect Angles Cling and it worked quite well.  I pressed the wrong direction so one of the first group was a throw away.  I am using my Bloc Loc Flying geese ruler to trim.  I decided to use my hand dyes for the teal and melon parts of the Brave New World Block.  I quite like the result.  I did not intend to stitch this together because I decided to make my flying geese duos all different.  To make the Brave New World Blocks I am using my Accuquilt to make the teal square and the brown half square triangles.  They measure 3.5 inches so it's a go.  Tomorrow I will get back to mass producing Part 6 and the brown geese.
